The Man Who Became a Tiger: Baji Prabhu Deshpande and the Last Stand at Ghodkhind

 They were surrounded.

300 Marathas…

Against 10,000 trained Mughal soldiers.

Their king had escaped.
Their mission: hold the pass, or die trying.

This is the story of Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the man who blocked an army with his blood — and became a legend for all time.

🐅 The King’s Great Escape

In 1660 CE, Shivaji Maharaj was trapped in the fort of Panhala, under siege by the Mughal commander Siddi Johar.

Desperate, Shivaji decided to make a secret escape at night, with a small group of soldiers.

But there was a problem.

The enemy would realize he had escaped… and chase him.

So someone had to stay back and fight a delaying battle.
It was a death mission.

Baji Prabhu Deshpande, his most trusted commander, volunteered.

He said:

“You go ahead, Maharaj. I will stop the mountain from bleeding.”

⚔️ The Battle of Ghodkhind

Baji and about 300 soldiers took position at the narrow mountain pass of Ghodkhind (now Pavan Khind), a gorge so tight that only a few soldiers could enter at once.

Behind them: escape route.
Ahead: waves of Mughal troops.

Baji drew his sword and told his men:

“We will fight till we hear the cannon of Vishalgad. That’s the signal Shivaji has reached safety. Until then — no one flees, no one surrenders.”

The Mughal army attacked.

Wave after wave.

Baji fought like a beast — sword in one hand, shield in the other, despite being hit by arrows and swords.

🩸 Bleeding But Unbowed

Baji was gravely wounded — multiple times.

His body was pierced.
His breath was labored.
But he kept fighting — roaring Maratha war cries.

Hours passed.
Still no cannon.

He stood in the blood-soaked pass, half-dead, holding back hundreds.

Finally…
BOOM.

The cannon of Vishalgad fired.

Shivaji was safe.

Only then did Baji collapse — smiling.
